Netflix for Toys - Summer'23 - The Gentle Nudge
Summer is almost over and this is our last update from Maciek and his team.
For this last update we have decided to do something different - instead of the usual PPP (progress, problems, plans), Maciek wrote a little longer note.
The most exciting part - you can check out his investment teaser, see how he pitches his business to potential investors, and leave your comments and feedback directly in the document.
I encourage you to go through the document - it’s very well done.
Below Maciek’s update, I share what’s next for TGN.
Enjoy and have a wonderful week ahead!
Maciek’s (Last) Weekly Update
Last week marked the least productive and most disheartening period since I began this journey.
My children experienced a tough time, and honestly, I'm responsible due to my absence in recent weeks.
I had to devote an entire day to retrieve my van from the other end of the country where the engine broke down two months ago during our return from a year-long trip.
My personal energy had depleted, and during meetings, I struggled to maintain focus.
Our access to the toy distributor's portfolio is still not granted.
Additionally, on Friday, during my final call, I had to deliver challenging feedback to one of our team members. Nevertheless, there was one positive highlight - our first All Hands meeting (see below).
However, it's alright; good weeks and tough weeks - I embrace them all. It's all part of the normal ebb and flow of this adventure. 🙂
Today I have more meaty news.
First and foremost: I'm thrilled to share that our investment teaser is now ready.
You'll find it linked below.
I opted for Notion instead of a traditional slide-deck for several reasons:
Someone executed it well, and I found it appealing (kudos to evidose.co).
Mobile-friendliness: slides often lack readability on mobile devices unless specifically designed for lower resolutions.
Navigation: notion allows easy exploration in any order of topics.
Deepdives: I can provide more detailed information under toggle buttons, catering to those genuinely interested.
Stats: though only view counts.
Flexibility: updates are possible, be it typos or more substantial changes, even after distribution. It grows with the business.
Feedback: I can gather specific feedback directly on the document and finetune it before sendout to angels/investors..
Speaking of feedback, I sincerely need yours. I've reached a point of slight blindness towards both the topic and the teaser document.
Seriously, we genuinely value your input.
Secondly, we're committed to the brand name - it's Klub Zabawkowy, which translates to Toy Club (yes, that domain was available!). A big shoutout to my wife, Kasia, for coining the name!
Thirdly, this is my final update on TGN.
Thank you all for taking your precious time to read these updates over the past few months. I hope they were of some use to you or nudged you a little 😀. Most importantly, I really want to thank my entire team, with whom I'm now sharing this exhilarating journey. They are the source of my greatest excitement; I look up to each one of them in various ways, and I'm certain we’ll have great time building this thing. It’s time you meet them:
Klub Zabawkowy Team
Last but not least, congratulations Marcin. Your work (TGN) might just have given me that final nudge I needed, and it was (a) Treat ❤️
P.S. If you'd like to stay updated on Klub Zabawkowy, let's connect on LinkedIn 👋 - I'll share updates there from time to time. Take care everyone!
Maciek - thank you so much for participating in TGN’s Summer’23 cohort!
Judging from comments and open rates - hundreds of people found your journey helpful and I sincerely hope together we have seeded some new entrepreneurial ambitions among TGN subscribers.
You asked me for feedback on your Investment Teaser - here it is in the form of my final nudge:
Klub Zabawkowy - the name is perfect, mostly because it defines the whole category - 5 years from now, should any competitors pop up, they will all need to take some derivative names. Love it!
$50M ARR in 4 years - or roughly 200M PLN ARR - sounds incredibly ambitious - assuming you make people pay 2k/year for the subscription, that’s 100k customers you need to find. I’m a little sceptical here, but I like ambitious goals.
I really like “X-mas every month” as a marketing slogan! Powerful.
The team is great, I especially like that a) you have complimentary skills and b) you all worked together before.
One thing I’m missing - is there a vesting schedule on the founding team? Super important to have something like this. It’s like a prenup for co-founders, a blueprint for breakups, to avoid messiness.
I see you have 3 strong hypothesis around the problem you are solving: price, clutter, and environment.
This will now be your biggest challenge - to determine to which one of these problems your solution is a vitamin (nice to have) vs aspirin (must have).
The other framework to use: where do you deliver 10x improvement vs 10% improvement.
I actually like the “buy after you try” value prop. Trunk Club is an example of this model - I would only be cautious about taking too much VC financing.
“81% of parents stated that their children already play with second-hand toys” - that’s a fantastic insight! Are there any marketplaces in Poland for reselling toys?
One other opportunity: you may offer your service to toy producers as a discovery tool - and secure your inventory cheaper / for free.
I would love to see a little more of: financial projections that take you to $50M ARR, unit economics, and maybe a little more about the logistics and fulfillment process - this seems to me like the biggest lift in this project.
Alright - that’s my feedback!
All the best to you and your team - all my fingers are crossed!
What’s next for TGN?
Here is a little reflection on the past 8 months:
I wrote a TGN update 40 times now
this translates to 93,506 emails delivered
average open rate is 55% - nice!
and average unsubscribe rate is only 0.82% - nice!
Maybe more importantly this work resulted in:
roughly 200 video calls with aspiring founders
91 people who joined the slack community and started working on their projects with regular PPP updates
at least 3 confirmed cases of people launching their first businesses
I myself invested in one project and became a fractional co-founder through TGN connection
There were also some challenges:
I have publicly committed to building a company from scratch and I failed
the switch to 3 updates a week was definitely too much - we lost a bunch of subscribers to that decision
the PPP format was liked by some of you, but disliked by others - I think it wasn’t good enough
due to my other responsibilities, I decided to sunset my engagement with the G Squad community on Slack, and moved ownership to one of our amazing community members
All in all - this all looks like a typical entrepreneurial journey, and in that sense I believe it’s useful to watch and learn from.
the mission stays the same: to nudge the next generation of entrepreneurs into starting their first business
for now, I will switch to irregular updates and prioritize quality over regular schedule (aka you will get a TGN newsletter when I believe I have something interesting to share)
you can expect more intimate content, personal lessons and updates, interesting opportunities or ideas, everything around entrepreneurship
if you are working on a project you would like to be featured on TGN, or any other idea you want to share - simply reply to this email
Finally - if you don’t find the content super helpful, I encourage you to unsubscribe. No hard feelings, I’m very particular about my inbox too, and I’d rather have fewer readers, but Open Rate >80%.
If, on the other hand, you like what we are doing here - I will appreciate you clicking this button to show your support 🙂 (it will show you a cute video of a chimp hugging a small tiger - and I will see that click in my analytics).
Alright! Till next time!
How did you like today's newsletter?
If you are new here - welcome! My name is Marcin and I believe that anyone can become a successful entrepreneur. I was nudged by two friends in my 20s to start a company, and it changed my life. I now made it my life’s mission to pay it forward and nudge the next generation of entrepreneurs into starting their first business.
