Netflix for Toys - Summer'23 - The Gentle Nudge
Happy Sunday nudgescribers!
A bunch of news today:
We are going back to one newsletter a week, on Sundays.
We are sticking to updates just from Maciek and his “Netflix for Toys”.
Many of you struggled with keeping up with 3 different stories and 3 separate updates a week. I decided to pick Maciek’s project because:
it’s the one earliest on the startup building journey
it’s the easiest to relate to (we all understand toys!)
Having said that, I want to sincerely thank Alec (Baxter) and Mateusz (epinote) for participating in this experiment. I have nothing but love and support for all entrepreneurs “in the arena”, and I can’t wait to see what future both of you will dream up.
Finally, to build on top Maciek’s updates, I will experiment with some light commentary, as if I were Maciek’s advisor or investor.
Let me know what you think about these changes!
And now - Maciek’s update! (Week #5)

Congrats on securing the first investors! Just like the first customer, or the first employee, getting someone to believe in your vision with their money turns what was just an idea in your head into reality - an act of entrepreneurial magic!
I want to nudge you about two things:
hiring - you mentioned you don’t have enough time to screen the candidates. These however are the most consequential decisions a founder makes. Company culture is like fast drying cement - if you get it wrong, it will be really hard to change. As the mantra goes: A players hire A players. B players hire C players.
lack of sleep - as a founder, you have a fiduciary duty to take good care of yourself - your diet, your sleep, your health, and stress. Best investors require their portfolio founders to be in shape, take vacation, and block time for rest. Some people think it’s cool to be a CEO because you don’t report to anyone. In reality, you report to everyone: your family, your team, your investors, and your customers. Taking good care of yourself is part of the job description.
Amazing progress! Can’t wait to see the first version of branding! Till next week.

If you are new here - welcome! My name is Marcin and I believe that anyone can become a successful entrepreneur. I was nudged by two friends in my 20s to start a company, and it changed my life. I now made it my life’s mission to pay it forward and nudge the next generation of entrepreneurs into starting their first business.
